Become an International Advisory Council Member

As we expand our Advisory Council, we are seeking a diverse membership with broad geographical representation, and a rich mix of background and experience.

Volunteer Role

Exciting opportunity to join our International Advisory Council

Are you passionate about transformative education, critical pedagogy, and social justice? Do you believe in the power of community, dialogue, and hope as tools for liberation and change?

Freire Institute invites committed members to apply for a volunteer position on our expanding International Advisory Council (IAC). The Council plays a key role in shaping the strategic direction of the Institute and supporting its mission to promote inclusive, critical, and community-based education.

About the opportunity

The International Advisory Council (IAC) is evolving as a dynamic, participatory body to support our mission more deeply. Inspired by the philosophy and pedagogy of Paulo Freire, we seek members committed to social justice, community empowerment, and reflective, collaborative practice.

What's involved:

  • Attend three main Council meetings per year (online).
  • Dedicate 4–6 hours per month offering input on strategy, programming, and institutional direction.
  • Serve a term of one to three years, with the possibility of extension.

Who we are looking for

There is no single profile for IAC members. We welcome a broad range of educators—whether working formally or informally—who:

✔ Are current members of Freire Institute (click here to learn about becoming a member).
Embody our shared values of critical pedagogy, educational equity, and community transformation.
✔ Can commit time and energy to support the work of the Institute.
✔ Serve as educators in any context: schools, universities, communities, social movements, or informal settings

We are especially seeking to build a Council that is:
  • Diverse in terms of race, gender, culture and global region
  • Intergenerational—welcoming both emerging visionaries and experienced educators
  • Representative of a range of educational and practice-based backgrounds, from grassroots to institutional levels

What you will do

As an IAC Member, you will:
  • Offer guidance on strategy, programming, and outreach
  • Amplify the Institute’s mission within your networks
  • Engage in participatory, ethical decision-making
  • Collaborate with a global community of critical educators
  • Reflect collectively on practice and action to guide transformative change

Why join the Advisory Council?

✔ Engage in meaningful, values-driven collaboration
✔ Support work that advances social and educational justice
✔ Participate in a unique intergenerational, intercultural learning space
✔ Help shape the future of the Institute and its wider impact
