Community Organizing Workshop

Mobilizing communities for change

Equipping community practititoners with tools for organizing and mobilizing communities

Making change happen doesn't occur by chance; it requires skillful organizing. This workshop understands organizing itself as a powerful educational process. Drawing inspiration from the practical strategies of organizers like Saul Alinsky and the transformative educational philosophy of Paulo Freire, we focus on praxis – the dynamic process of informed action and critical reflection. This is not just about learning about organizing; it's about deepening your ability to do it effectively and thoughtfully.
We work collaboratively with your group to tailor the sessions to your specific context and challenges. Our goal is to equip you with the understanding and practical tools needed to build collective power. Core areas we typically explore include:
  • Building your base: Techniques for listening to community concerns, identifying shared issues, forging strong relationships and alliances, and effectively engaging and retaining supporters for your cause.
  • Structuring for power: Exploring different models for decision-making, designing effective and democratic organizational structures, and developing accountable forms of leadership.
  • Navigating group dynamics: Strategies for building healthy group dynamics, navigating conflict constructively, and utilizing dialogue and negotiation effectively.
  • Strategic planning and action: Developing clear strategies, realistic action plans, mapping resources effectively, and designing creative, impactful tactics.
  • Learning and sustaining the effort: Embedding a process of action-reflection to learn continuously from experience, training others within your group, and renewing energy and enthusiasm for the long run.

Through dialogue, shared analysis, and practical exercises, participants will leave better equipped to analyse power, mobilise their communities, and build sustainable movements for a more just world.
