Alternative Economics
Building economies centred on people and planet
Whose economy counts? Exploring solidarity and social value
Mainstream economics, focused narrowly on GDP and market transactions, often overlooks vast and vital areas of human activity. Think of the essential care provided in homes, the power of voluntary work strengthening community bonds, or the simple neighbourly exchange of skills and support. These form a crucial 'non-exchange economy', insights powerfully highlighted by feminist economists and community practitioners. Recognizing this hidden work is the first step towards valuing what truly sustains us.
Beyond this, thriving examples of a different way already exist. The social and solidarity economy offers tangible alternatives – from co-operatives owned and run by their members, to community-owned enterprises meeting local needs, and publicly-controlled services designed for collective well-being, not just profit. These are not just theoretical models; they are real-world examples of economic activity rooted in principles of democracy, equity, and mutual support.
This workshop invites you into a dialogue – a space to examine critically the dominant economic narratives we have learned. We challenge you (and ourselves) to question assumptions about value, growth, and progress. Together, we will move beyond critique towards praxis: exploring practical strategies and tools to nurture and build an economics of solidarity. How can we strengthen local exchange systems? How can we support co-operative development? How can we advocate for policies that recognise and encourage the social economy?
This is an active learning experience designed for anyone seeking to understand and contribute to more just, equitable, and sustainable economic futures – whether in your community group, organisation, or personal life.
