Alternative Economics

Harnessing the social economy

A large proportion of economic activity just does not appear in measurements of national income or GDP. There is a whole non-exchange economy of voluntary work, reciprocal work and activities such as housework and personal care in the home. This insight by feminist economists and others provides an important corrective to how we understand economics.

It is also true that there are other activities that might be considered part of the social and solidarity economy: co-operatives, community-owned enterprises and publicly-controlled sectors, for example.

Participants are challenged to put aside their assumptions about economics to discover ways to build the economics of solidarity - practical alternatives to the dominant models around us.
